Don’t let this cold and snowy winter keep you down, spring is just around the corner! To keep you thinking those happy thoughts of warm weather, mark your calendar for the 2014 Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival. From April 2-13, the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia invites you to participate in dozens of events celebrating the art, music, food, and culture of Japan without the 14 hour flight.
Festivities begin on Wednesday, April 2 with a Kickoff Karaoke Party at Yakitori Boy. New for 2014, this event features food, drinks, and the main ingredient for fun – singing! – to put everyone in a celebratory mood.
Over the course of the following 11 days, there will be a visit from Tamagawa Taiko, Food Tasting at Maido, Sushi Making Classes, and films. We’ll also be returning to Liberty Place for Japanese Culture Week from April 7-11, with Kimono Dressing and Shogi among the lunchtime demonstrations.
Which brings us to the final fun-filled weekend. On Saturday, April 12, runners and walkers can take in the blossoms while getting active with the Cherry Blossom 5K. There will be a fun-run for kids and activities for spectators. Register now and get a head start on training! In the evening, we’ll introduce Sakura Under the Stars, a reception in the ohanami style at Shofuso Japanese House and Garden. Guests will be treated to high-end bentos, sake and of course beautiful views.
The 2014 Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival will culminate in a day of performances, crafts, demonstrations, and all things Japanese known as Sakura Sunday. In additions to your favorites – Prettiest Pet in Pink, Harajuku Fashion Show, and others – we’re expanding the Little Akiba anime/cosplay area and adding The Art of Sushi, an amateur sushi-making contest.
There are still a few cool months to endure, but we’ll be bringing you updates regularly. Check back often for a healthy dose of spring!
