Biwanko Children’s Taiko Group
Taiko drumming’s popularity in the US has exploded in recent years spawning numerous groups. Philadelphia is home to at least 4 active groups, but this New Jersey based troupe has a unique spin on the taiko scene and they’ll be bringing their talents to Sakura Sunday.
Biwanko is a children’s taiko group based in Bergen County, New Jersey. The members were encouraged to explore their Japanese heritage by their parents, coming together in 2007 to perform at an Oshogatsu – New Year’s – event. The allure of the drums was strong and the group has continued to perform.
The name Biwanko is comprised of three parts:
BI (美)- beauty (the character represents America),
WA(和)- harmony (the character represents Japan),
KO(鼓)- a drum
While they’ve performed at the National Cherry Blossom Festival in D.C. before, this is Biwanko’s first trip to Philadelphia. They’ll be joining us on the Main stage at 12:30 pm. Please show these young performers a proper Philly welcome!
