The Tamagawa University Taiko Drum and Dance troupe have returned to Philadelphia for this year’s Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival for a week of awe-inspiring performances. You can still catch them one last time this Sakura Sunday at the Main Stage at 9:15 am for a pre-ceremony call to attention, as well as performances at 10:15 am and 3:30 pm. The group has been touring the world since 1961, visiting countries like Mexico, Russia, Greece, Malaysia, England, and of course the United States. Rooted in Japanese folk tradition, Tamagawa’s drum performances are visually stunning, athletic and graceful. Their high-energy concerts have earned them awards and accolades in the US and abroad. For example, in 2006 the Tamagawa troupe won Third Prize out of 450 competing groups in the Tokyo International Taiko Contest.
This top-ranking troupe delivers incredible acrobatic performances of dance, music, and motion with a thundering verve that audiences will surely find addictive. The group will be playing on various Philadelphia-region stages throughout the festival, and ticket prices will vary by location. With expectations of booming drums, intricate dances, and beautiful costumes, a performance by Tamagawa’s thirty-piece troupe of drummers and dancers is something you definitely won’t want to miss.
