Coming to Sakura Sunday for some neat demonstrations of various Japanese cultural activities? Check out Matsuri Village to immerse yourself with a display of a wide variety of specialized arts and enjoy various fun activities for kids and adults alike. One never gets too old for the stylistic endeavor that is Sand Art (courtesy of It’s A Print Shop), and who doesn’t get their face painted at a festival? Thankfully the Japan Association of Greater Philadelphia will bring the means to keep no face unpainted. If face paint isn’t your thing, they will also provide fortune-telling. What else does Matsuri Village have to offer?
Martial Arts Demonstrations
We all have a little karate kid inside us. That’s why we’re happy to have the River of Life Dojo, Doshinkan Aikido, and Genbukan Banri Dojo, all come to help get your kicks with some martial arts demonstrations! Only at Matsuri Village will you be able to see these three expert practitioners perform demonstrations of multiple forms of martial arts. Come experience aikido, ninjutsu, taijutsu, kata, cutting demonstrations and more!
Osuwa Kids Taiko
Can’t get enough Taiko? Find Matsuri Village to enjoy some traditional Osuwa-style Taiko performance by the kids of Biwanko Group, Inc. who range from only 6 to 18 years old! There are 9 Taiko drummers and 3 Shinobue flute players will present 4 masterful songs to fulfill your drumming needs. Biwanko Group will be starting their live performance at 2 PM.
Traditional Dance by IchiFuji-kai
A dance style similar to the traditional dances of Kabuki theater, Helen Moss leads IchiFuji-kai as they gracefully perform their Nihon Buyo dance at 2:45 PM. They will also be hosting an audience dance workshop at 4:15 so that you can try your hand at performing these gentle, flowing movements. For more details on IchiFuji-kai, their performances, and other events, check our IchiFuji-kai Performer Profile!
Need more activity? Stick around Matsuri Village to take in the beautiful singing of the JAGP Chorus Group U&I! They’ll be performing a total of 6 songs including one sing-along to get everyone involved. The songs in question will be:
- Sakura Sakura さくらさくら
- Hana no machi 花の街
- Sen no kaze ni natte 千の風になって
- Furusato ふるさと
- Hana 花
- (Sing-Along) Edelweiss エーデルワイス
So prepare your ears for what is sure to be a great time with the JAGP who will be playing TWICE. First at 12:30, and if you miss that (we forgive you, there’s a lot to do), they will be singing again at 3:30 so be sure to catch one of them!
