The magnificent, classical Japanese dance group, IchiFuji-kai, returns to perform on Sakura Sunday this year on April 15th.
Led by Fujima Nishiki-no (Helen Moss), a master of the elegant Soke Fujima style of dance, their style is similar to the dance of Kabuki theatre. In the 300-year history of Soke Fujima, the Grandmasters have choreographed numerous well-known Kabuki theatre classics. Fujima Nishiki-no has extensive experience in teaching this dance style all over the New York area and beyond. She has given workshops and lecture demonstrations on Japanese culture and dance right here at Shofuso Japanese House and Garden, as well as artist-in-residency series of workshops at Lafayette College.
The group will perform a variety of dances on the Matsuri Village Stage this year, including male and female-style dances, small ensemble dances, group dances, as well as two new dances: “Wakashu” and “Wakai fujimusume”.
IchiFuji-kai Dance Association is a non-profit organization that represents the Soke Fujima dance style in the New York area.
IchiFuji-kai will perform their Nihon-Buyo Dance at 2:45pm, and will be holding an audience workshop in Matsuri Village at 4:15pm. Want the full schedule? Look no further, click Here. You can find out more about IchiFuji-kai by following this link.
